On Our Terms

On Our Terms is a collaborative project that challenges the power dynamics embedded in the terms of service of major tech platforms. These agreements often give platform owners extensive control over user data and content, with little room for negotiation or consent. The lack of opt-out options and limited remedies for breaches highlight a system that prioritizes platform control over user rights.

In response, On Our Terms invites users to define their own terms, flipping the script on the current power structure. Through this project, users outline what they expect from platforms–how services should be provided and developed–and specify what information and content they're willing to share, along with how they expect their data to be handled.

If the terms of service represent a declaration of platform power, then On Our Terms is a critical response, calling on tech companies to adopt terms shaped by the user community.
